Field Trip to TMII

Electricity Museum

The generator in the dam produces energy that is our daily use. the generator works because of the help of water. Energy is then sent to the power station and sends us all the energy that we use daily. We need to save water because it produces many energy each day. We can save it by not letting the water in the tap always run. If we do so, it means we also save energy in our house because it is the one making energy for our daily use everyday.

IPTEK

When we arrived at IPTEK, we went to an auditorium. We did 3 experiments there. The topic of the experiment is fire and magic pressure. The first one is called dragonfire. It is when we blow out fire through a pipe. The second one is called burning hands. It is when we can hold fire. The third one is called collapsing can. It is when we burn a can and the can collapse when it touches the water. After that we went to an earthquake stimulation. It is when we can feel how is it like in an earthquake. We also did an experiment on how to make an electromagnet. We did many activities there at IPTEK.

Steps:
1. Dragonfire: First attach a pipe with a funnel. Then put corn startch on the funnel 
                       and blow on the pipe together with burning the startch. Fire will come
                       out of the startch on the funnel.
2. Burning hands: First prepare a place to put clean water. Then, wash our hands with
                              the water up to your elbow. Second, wash your hands thoroughly
                              with soap water also up to your elbow. Third, shape your
                              hand as if it is a bowl and put some of the soap water there, don't let
                              the water drip to make the fire better. After that, put gas to the water
                              inside your hand, the water will turn into bubbles. Finally, turn on
                              the match stick and burn the bubbles. Fire will appear from the
                              water in your hand.
3. Collapsing can: Burn the can that you are holding with the tongs.. When your can is
                             on fire, quickly tilt your can upside down and put it inside the water.
                             The can will collapse.


From these activities, I learnt that with corn startch, we can produce bigger fire. I also learnt that we can hold fire when our hands are covered with buubles. Also I learnt that with water and fire, cans can collapse.

In our life, we can use the dragonfire experiment for cooking to make bigger fire. We can also use the information for making experiments in our school or home.

Pendulum

Motion of a Pendulum

Observe: How the length of the string affects the motion of the pendulum.
Use apparatus: To measure the time taken for the pendulum to make 10 swings.
Infer: That the length of the string affects the time takenfor the pendulum to make one
           swing.

Aim: To find out how the length of the string affects the motion of the pendulum.
Materials: A metal ball, three pieces of string (10cm, 15cm, 20cm),a retort stand, some
                 masking tape, a protractor, a stopwatch.

Procedures
1. Attach the metal ball to one end of the 10cm string.
2. Secure the other end of the string to retort stand.
3. Use the masking tape to attach a protractor to retort stand.
4. Use the stopwatch to record the time it takes for the pendulum to make 10 swings.
5. Repeat steps 1 to 5 using the 15cm string and the 20cm string.

Observation
1. 10cm string: Takes 3.66 seconds to make 10 swings.
2. 15cm string: Takes 4.72 seconds to make 10 swings.
3. 20cm string: Takes 5.31 seconds to make 10 swings.

The 20cm string took the longest time to make 10 swings, and the 10cm string took the shortest time to make 10 swings.

Conclusion
The gravitational force pulls the pendulum to center and therefore, the pendulum slows down and stop. The length of the string also effects the motion of the pendulum, the longer the string, the longer the time it takes.

Gravitational Force

Gravitational Force

Observe: What happens when two objects of the same shape but different mass are released from the same height.
Infer: That all objects fall at the same rate, regardless of their mass.

Aim: To observe the effect of gravity on objects.
Materials: A small rug, two similar plastic bottles (one filled with water, the other is empty), low chair.

Procedures
1. Work in pairs. Place the rug on the ground.
2. Hold both bottles, one in each hand. With your arms stretched out in front of you,
    drop both bottles at the same time. Observe how they fall.
3. Now stand on low chair. Drop both bottles again with your arms outstretched.
    Observe how they fall.
Observations
1. When we drop the two bottles the first time, both of the bottles fall at the same time.
2. When we drop the two bottles again while standing on the chair, the bottles also fall
     at the same time.


Conclusion
 All objects fall at the same rate, regardless of their mass.
